Two types of MRTP systems

Single Stage Systems

Rapid heating and cooling rates down to -25° C and a range to -35° C.
Single Stage MRTP systems heat and cool a thermal platform very efficiently. They have rapid heating with good cooling rates down to about -20° or -25° C. They will cool down below -35° C but the rate of change decreases rapidly below -20° or -25° C. This is because a single stage system uses a single compressor and a single type of refrigerant. The refrigerant used has a boiling point near -46° C. Once the temperature differential between the thermal platform and refrigerant is less than 20° C then thermal transfer is slower and the platform cools much less rapidly. The device under test sees a corresponding reduction in cooling rates.

Cascade Systems

Rapid heating and cooling rates down to -55° C and a range to -65° C.
Cascade MRTP systems heat and cool a thermal platform very efficiently. They have rapid heating with good cooling rates down to about -50° or -55° C. They will cool down below -65° C but the rate of change decreases rapidly below -50° or -55° C. This is because the refrigerant used has a boiling point near -86° C. Once the temperature differential between the thermal platform and refrigerant falls below 20° C, then thermal transfer is slower and the platform cools much less rapidly. The device under test sees a corresponding reduction in cooling rates. A cascade system uses two compressors and two different types of refrigerant. This allows it to economically and reliably reach temperatures that are much lower than a single stage system is able to achieve.

Compound Systems (Coming Soon)

ESS, Inc. will soon offer MRTPs with compound refrigeration systems. Compound systems use a single type of refrigerant and employ a single compressor with a two-stage or "compound" compression process to deliver thermal platform temperatures as low as -65° C and usable device under test temperatures of -45° C. Compound systems are less complicated and cost less than cascade systems and give a more useful low temperature test range than single stage MRTP systems. If you think your test application can benefit from an MRTP with the extended low temperature range from compound refrigeration please contact us and let us know.
