Ultra Low Temperature (ULT) Gas Coolers, Liquid Coolers and Gas to Liquid Condensers
Many process applications require the cooling of gas or liquid or the condensing of gas into liquid. When very cold gas or liquid temperatures or gas to liquid condensing temperatures are required, a standard cascade condensing unit with an integrated evaporator/heat exchanger can be used. Our ULT coolers, sometimes referred to as ULT chillers or ULT condensers combine a standard ESS, Inc, cascade condensing unit with a stainless steel brazed plate heat exchanger. The refrigerant in the 2nd or low stage of the cascade condensing unit is evaporated inside the heat exchanger. The gas or liquid to be cooled or the gas to be condensed also passes through the heat exchanger. The brazed plated heat exchanger is compact and has very good thermal transfer between the refrigerant and the gas or liquid. The stainless steel material used in the construction of the heat exchanger is compatible with a wide variety of gasses and liquids. Standard cascade condensing units are available in heat removal capacities from 100 watts to 9000 watts rated at -80° C SST (saturated suction temperature). Minimum temperatures are around -90° C. Approach temperatures of 10° C are a good rule of thumb. For example, if you are cooling a gas and the evaporator is at -80° C, you should expect the gas temperature at the outlet of the heat exchanger to be -70° C. Tighter approaches are possible with the appropriate heat exchanger. Thermal analysis of your process to accurately size the capacity of the condensing unit and evaporator/heat exchanger assembly is available as a contract service.
